Speech therapy at Silderhuis Speech Therapy
Speech problems can occur at any age and often have a significant impact on communication. At Silderhuis Speech Therapy, we offer targeted speech treatments to help both children and adults with articulation problems, stuttering and other speech disorders. Our goal is to improve speech comprehension to increase our clients’ confidence and communication skills.
Speech therapy in children
In children, speech problems frequently occur during speech development. You should expect a child of 5 – 6 years old to be able to pronounce all letters correctly. Common challenges include:
- Articulation problems: Children have difficulty pronouncing certain sounds correctly. This may manifest itself in omitting sounds or replacing one sound with another (for example, saying “tist” instead of “chest”).
- Stuttering: Stuttering can occur at an early age and can interfere with fluent speech. With proper treatment, children learn to better control their speech and develop confidence in their communication.
Speech therapy in adults
Adults can also experience problems with speech, often due to neurological disorders or injury. A common speech disorder in adults is dysarthria, in which speech is difficult to understand due to damage to the nervous system. This can be caused by stroke, Parkinson’s or other neurological conditions, for example. Our speech therapists help adults improve their speech through targeted exercises and therapies that support speech motor skills.
What is OMFT (oromyofunctional therapy)?
In addition to our regular speech treatments, we also offer oromyofunctional therapy (OMFT).
Our approach
At Silderhuis Speech Therapy, we work with a personalized approach. Our speech therapists first conduct an extensive history and examination to understand where the speech problems are coming from. We then create a treatment plan tailored to the specific needs of the child or adult. Whether it’s articulation training, stutter therapy or OMFT, we provide expert guidance with an eye for the individual.
