My 2-year-old child says only single words, is that normal?
What can you expect at this age?
It is quite normal for a 2-year-old child to use mostly single words. At this age, your child is expanding his vocabulary and learning more and more new words. Children this age speak between 200 and 300 words on average, but this can vary from child to child. Before age two your child will slowly begin to combine words into short phrases, two-word sentences. If this is still not the case by two years, it is wise to consult a speech therapist.
How can you encourage language development?
By talking to your child a lot, reading books together and singing songs, you will help stimulate your child’s language development naturally. This makes learning new words not only fun, but also familiar and safe. Communicating regularly and introducing new words will give your child a good foundation for further language development.
When is it a good idea to consult a speech therapist?
If your child uses significantly fewer words than peers or has difficulty communicating, it may be advisable to consult a speech therapist. A speech therapist can assess your child’s language development and, if necessary, provide guidance to further encourage speech and language skills.
